What Triage Means for Your Pet
Triage is the process of quickly evaluating a patient to decide how urgently they need medical care. In veterinary medicine, this means our team will assess your pet’s symptoms right away to determine if they need immediate, life-saving treatment, urgent care within a short time frame, or if their condition is stable enough to safely wait.
Just like in a human emergency room, the most critical patients are treated first. For example, a pet having trouble breathing will be seen before one with a mild limp. Triage helps us make sure every pet receives the right level of care at the necessary time.
Understanding the Pet Triage Process
At West Park Animal Hospital, our pet triage process follows recommendations by the American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) and has been fine-tuned over the years. It includes:
1. Providing Immediate Assessment and Communication
When you suspect your pet is in crisis, you need to contact our team immediately. Our client service representatives will gather information and provide guidance on next steps. Because many illnesses can share similar symptoms, we may sometimes recommend that your pet be examined in person out of an abundance of caution.
While our Customer Service Representatives (CSRs) are not veterinarians and cannot diagnose or prescribe treatment over the phone, they will do their best to help you decide whether your pet may need an emergency or urgent visit, or if close monitoring at home could be appropriate. Ultimately, the decision to bring your pet in rests with you, but we are here to support you with empathy and keep you informed every step of the way.
2. Prioritizing Your Pet’s Needs
Once you arrive, we’ll triage your pet. Our AAHA-accredited facility is equipped to attend to pets based on their condition, whether it includes lameness, vomiting, seizures, or other concerning symptoms. Our designated entrances for potentially contagious patients and separate treatment zones for cats and dogs help streamline care, reduce stress, and ensure each pet receives the proper attention right away.
3. Diagnostic and Treatment Planning
Once your pet is triaged, our veterinarians may order diagnostic tests, such as lab work, X-rays, or ultrasounds.. All of these tests are available on-site. Combined with a thorough physical examination, these tools help us pinpoint the issue and craft a tailored treatment plan for your beloved family member.
4. Providing Dedicated Critical Care and Observation
If your pet requires more observation, we’ll admit them to our Intensive Care Unit. This allows us to monitor their illness or treatment 24/7. Our critical-care cages and monitoring systems allow our devoted team to keep a close eye on your pet’s progress. You can expect regular updates from our veterinarians during your pet’s stay, and if anything critical arises, we’ll call you right away. Your pet’s care and comfort are always our top priority.
5. Giving Clear Guidance
At West Park Animal Hospital, we believe in empowering pet parents with knowledge and resources to care for their pets confidently. Following triage, we will explain why your pet needs further treatment, what to expect, how to manage care at home, and when to schedule follow-ups. Our team is ready to answer any questions to help ease your stress and anxiety.
6. Coordinating Multiple Emergencies
When multiple emergencies arrive, our state-of-the-art facility and expert triage process enable us to handle each case. With sixteen exam rooms and specialized treatment areas, we can manage several cases simultaneously. However, there are times when the number of emergencies exceeds what we can see at once. Just like in a human ER, patients are treated in order of medical priority.
This means that if your pet has a non-urgent condition, such as an ear infection, they may need to wait while we stabilize a pet experiencing difficulty breathing or loss of consciousness. We ask for your patience and understanding during these times, as our team’s top priority is always to provide immediate care to the most critical patients.
